Unix tip: Show gcc's predefined macros

If you ever need to know what your Gnu compiler is setting as predefined macros, along with their values, then run the following command in a shell:

gcc -dM -E - < /dev/null | sort
I recently had to find out how to do this to fix a bug compiling old versions of boost on Fedora, and thought this sufficiently interesting to note down permanently. The following is the output on the virtual Fedora I'm running on my Macbook. Not only can you get access to the version of the compiler but there is a host of primitive type size and precision information.

NuSTAR doing OK

NuSTAR (an acronym for Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array) is a new NASA hard X-ray observatory which was launched on June 13th, appears to be well in in-Orbit check-out.

There is a nice "first light" image of the classic Galactic black hole Cygnus X-1 comparing the blurry image of Cyg X-1 taken with Integral compared to NuSTAR's image. See the NuSTAR-related NASA News page for more information.

Athena is dead and with it "big" X-ray astronomy dies finally

Well, so much for hoping that there might be another big X-ray observatory launched next two decades (where big is billion+ euros or billion+ dollars). Athena, the de-scoped IXO, didn't get picked by ESA. See Dynamics of Cats for a discussion and link to the official report. When you don't have politicians to pork barrel you back into life it doesn't matter whether you're on budget, close to budget, or instead chronically mismanaged and way out of budget.

There will be medium-class X-ray missions that can keep some of the engineers and some of the scientists alive, akin to the way endangered animals are kept in zoos and reserves, but X-ray astronomy is dead as a major branch of astrophysics. It's a niche, and not one valued by other astronomers (apart from the Japanese, who will probably continue to chug along doing good new medium-size missions and new work), irrespective of the unique scientific perspective it (used to) provides.

Pictures from Discovery's final voyage to DC.

The Space Shuttle Discovery, or its somewhat gutted carcass, was flown over where I work yesterday on its way to the Air & Space Museum out at Dulles International Airport. Thanks to a telecon I missed seeing, but various co-workers got a bunch of picture of it that are actually more impressive than the National Geographic gallery here.
